Nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans) explore exact, microscopic replicas of the nude male and female figures from the Pioneer spacecraft. Like those early explorers, I am saying to the worms, “Hello, I am here!”, and like the Pioneer plaques, the works are more about my desires and aspirations, rather than the worms' experiences.
The sculptures are made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using photolithographic techniques. All the shading is bacteria, archaea, fungi, and worm detritus.
